Free screen reading software that reads whatever you highlight on the computer screen no matter what program you are in. If you upgrade to the paid version, you can select a variety of voices that are more natural and easier to understand than the computer voices that come with the free program. You do not need to pay to use this program, just for extras. This is very easy to use! All you need to do is launch the program, select the text to be read and then click the play button.

Read&Write for Google
One of many Google applications for education, this text to speech program can be downloaded for free (basic version) and teachers can upgrade that to the premium version for free.

Audacity
This is an audio-editing program which is free to download! Audacity allows you to record live video, convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CD's, edit sound files, mix sounds together, change the speed or pitch of a recording, analyze frequencies and much more! It is available to download to Windows, Mac OS X and Linux/Unix. You need your own microphone to record the sound.

CMap Tools
This is a free educational download for a concept mapping tool. It allows you to create concept maps and share them with other users.

Click Speak
This is a free download that installs a text to speech reader on Firefox. You can then open a web page, click on the program icon, and have the page read to you.

Balabolka
Free download for a text to speech program. Provides a document page that the user can type into and then have their words read aloud. You can also paste in content and then click on the speak button.

Tuxpaint
This is a free download that allows children to create computer art. It is free to schools and the public to use. An iPad app of it costs $1.99.
